This panel aims to explore the concept of adaptive leadership as a key tool for bridging generational, cultural, and organizational gaps in times of constant change. Leaders with diverse backgrounds will share their experiences, strategies, and lessons learned while leading in their YMCA communitiesāfacing challenges and seizing opportunities unique to their local contexts.
Connecting Vision and Action: Strategic Plan & Portfolio
This space is designed to deepen understanding of the Strategic Plan and its connection to the regional portfolio. Key elements of the plan will be shared, highlighting its alignment with YMCAās long-term vision and its impact across local and regional initiatives. The work of regional thematic networks will also be showcased as living examples of how the Strategic Plan and the service portfolio are being brought to life.
The Role of Young People in Vision 2030
This session will open up a space for honest, youth-led dialogue about the realities young people face within and outside the YMCA. It will focus on identifying significant challenges, opportunities, and ways young people engage in their communities across the region. Participants will also hear from other organizations working actively with and for youth to explore common ground, share inspiration, and spark collective action. Most importantly, this session will recognize young people’s transformative role in driving social and community change.
Green Resources: Innovation for a Sustainable Future
This session will explore how innovation can be integrated into YMCA programs to strengthen the “Sustainable Planet” and “Meaningful Work” pillars of Vision 2030. Through innovative strategies, we will promote environmental sustainability, youth empowerment, and positive community impact. Included will be a launch of the new YMCA Environmental Sustainability Toolkit as a resource for the transition to more just, sustainable, and resilient communities.
Collaboration and Consensus-Building Spaces: Strengthening Subregional Advocacy
This space aims to reinforce subregional advocacy by reviewing the work of subcommittees in coordination with government bodies and collaboratively preparing the agenda for the Executive Committee. Itās a key opportunity to align priorities, solidify consensus, and project a more cohesive and strategic regional representation.
Programs Visits
The social program visits will offer a first-hand look at the YMCAās transformative work across Montevideo, in collaboration with local partners. Participants will tour three initiativesāTejanitos, El Propio Youth Center, and Casa Joven Piedras Blancas alongside the ETAF territorial team to connect with real-life experiences that promote rights, youth participation, and the holistic development of children, adolescents, and their families in vulnerable contexts. These visits are a chance to engage with local teams, explore community-based methodologies, and reflect together on the impact of this work.

This session aims to strengthen regional synergies through a collaborative review of the YMCA LAC membership dues system and opening a consultation process regarding the 2026 Assembly. A key opportunity to build consensus that drives our sustainability and collective projection.

This panel will explore mental health approaches in Latin America, the Caribbean, and the United States, highlighting experiences, challenges, and lessons learned in diverse contexts. Special emphasis will be placed on the importance of interculturality in addressing mental health, recognizing how different communities integrate their values, practices, and realities into community-based mental health care. The discussion will encourage reflection on how to build culturally relevant and sensitive responses to the emotional needs of youth and communities in each context.

This session will delve into the characteristics, motivations, and behaviors of Millennial and Gen Z donors. Topics will include their expectations of social organizations, the importance of transparency and authenticity, and how they prefer to engage with causes they support. Participants will learn effective strategies to activate these donor groups, leveraging digital channels and innovative approaches to build lasting relationships and foster long-term engagement.

As president of Greater Austin YMCA, Kathy is a community leader, documentary filmmaker, and U.S. Marine Veteran. For over 30 years, she has championed resilient and sustainable communities at the YMCA.
She recently served on the Mayorās Task Force for Austin Women Entrepreneurs and is a member of the Austin Area Research Organization.
Since 2023, she has led the YMCA Green Network ā North America.

Felipe Jurado

Felipe Jurado DĆaz is a distinguished clinical neurologist and professor of neurology at the University of Chile. With over 40 years of work in the YMCA, he has been a volunteer, President of the Latin American and Caribbean Alliance of YMCAs, the Chilean YMCA Federation, and a member of the Executive Committee of the World Alliance of YMCAs.
Deeply passionate about his family, reading, history, philosophy, and poetry, he currently practices at Barros Luco Hospital, INDISA Clinic, and the SSMS Tele-Stroke Unit and supports regional governance spaces.

Ana Clara MartĆ

With a background in education and international cooperation and over ten years of experience in the YMCA, she leads organizational transformation and youth leadership. She is committed to building inclusive and resilient communities.

Betsabe Veliz

Peruvian lawyer and executive with experience in institutional leadership, strategic management, and business development. BetsabƩ has been the President of the National Board of Directors of YMCA Peru since 2021, the first woman and the youngest to assume this position.
She has promoted projects focused on youth employability, social innovation, and purpose-driven entrepreneurship. With education in Business Analytics, Financial Management, and Public Policy, she is a strategic partner of The Peruvian Social Incubator, advancing social impact businesses and international cooperation.
BetsabƩ has led a research project on prisons, which was recognized by PUCP, and advised on legislative projects concerning constitutional and human rights issues. She is fluent in Spanish, English, and German.

Valeria RuĆz

Valeria Ruiz joined the YMCA of Mexico in 2019 as the Coordinator of the YMCA Homes for Migrant Youth. With a presence in Tijuana, Ciudad Juarez, and Piedras Negras, the YMCA Homes for Migrant Youth have served over 75,000 children and teens since 1991.
Valeria studied International Relations at the Autonomous University of Baja California and holds a masterās in International Migration at El Colegio de la Frontera Norte.
Valeria participates in the Coalición Pro Defensa del Migrante and is an Advisor to the Elias Landsmanas Chair on unaccompanied migrant children of Anahuac University. As a leader, she focuses a significant part of her work on inspiring communities through philanthropic initiatives, building strategic alliances, and creating opportunities for young professionals. Valeria was recently appointed Binational Strategies Coordinator for MexicoāSan Diego. She will lead initiatives benefiting youth on both sides of the border.

JosƩ Pablo VelƔzquez

As Director of the YMCA San JosĆ©, he holds a Masterās degree in Human Development (FLACSO), a Bachelorās degree in Sociology (Udelar), and a technical degree in Education for Leisure and Recreation (UCU). He also holds a Culture and Heritage diploma and is pursuing another in Tools to Strengthen Socio-Emotional Development in Educational Contexts.
He focuses on institutional management and community development, promoting training processes integrating play, citizenship, and social innovation.

Angela MarĆa López Alvarado

Ćngela MarĆa López Alvarado has been a board member and volunteer at YMCA Guatemala since 2015. She holds a Bachelorās degree in Anthropology from San Carlos University of Guatemala and a Masterās in Social Innovation and Solidarity Economy from the University of Salamanca in Spain.
With over five years of experience designing social projects for international cooperation with various NGOs, her work is grounded in human rights, gender equity, and intercultural approaches. Over the past year, she coordinated the Weaving Peace in Central America project, successfully advancing community-based violence prevention initiatives.

Cindy Mels

PhD in Pedagogical Sciences from Ghent University, and a Level 2 Researcher in Uruguayās National Research System. She is a research professor and Director of the Department of Education at the Catholic University of Uruguay (UCU). She leads PICA, a program promoting socio-emotional skills and positive peer relationships among high school students.
From 2015 to 2019, she was a project director at the National Institute for Educational Evaluation (INEEd), responsible for nationwide assessments. Since 2017, she has regularly consulted for UNESCO and UNICEF in education and adolescent engagement.
Her research focuses on the psychosocial and academic consequences of exposure to violence, socio-emotional skills, school climate, and teacher well-being.

Sandra Giraldo

MarĆa Rivera Betancourt
FITS (WINGU) Director
Argentinian-Bolivian feminist communicator and project leader in technology, innovation, and social impact. She is a co-creator of tech products with a feminist perspective and a promoter of initiatives that strengthen the social sector through festivals that connect technology with democracy, gender, and sustainability across Latin America.
She is part of the Wingu team, where she serves as Director of FITS

Evelyn Daskalakis is a licensed mental health counselor and the Vice President of Social Services and Mental Health at the YMCA of Greater San Francisco.
Since 2004, she has led comprehensive programs for youth and families, focusing on equity, community wellbeing, and sustainability.
Evelyn is committed to creating impactful services that address systemic inequities and promote community well-being. She also plays a key role in securing funding through donor engagement, grant writing and fostering relationships with public and private agencies to ensure the long-term viability of these vital programs. She believes meaningful change happens at the intersection of healing and justice and she is passionate about helping organizations create resilient, equity-driven programs that not only serve communities but thrive through long-term sustainability and visionary investment.

Carlos began his YMCA journey as a volunteer in his home country of Togo. In 1987 he was appointed Leadership Development Secretary and worked his way up to Deputy General Secretary. In 1999, Carlos joined World YMCA in Geneva as Executive Secretary of Finance and Administration, contributing to strategic planning. In 2007, he became General Secretary of the African Alliance of YMCAs in Nairobi, leading significant youth empowerment efforts.
In 2018, Carlos made history as the first African elected World YMCA Secretary General, assuming the role in 2019 and emphasizing radical collaboration for global youth empowerment. He holds degrees in Physics, Chemistry, and social practices from UniversitĆ© du BĆ©nin in Togo and a āDiplĆ“me des Hautes Ć©tudes de pratiques sociales (DHEPS)ā from UniversitĆ© Lyon LumiĆØre II, France.

Antonio Merino is the General Secretary of the Latin American and Caribbean Alliance of YMCAs (YMCA LAC). With over 20 years of experience in international development and social impact, he focuses on creating innovative youth-led strategies and programs to address structural inequalities.
Previously, Antonio worked for the YMCA of the USA in Chicago, leading international capacity-building initiatives and promoting Diversity, Equity, and Global Inclusion strategies. He has extensive volunteer experience, including frontline program delivery in Mexico and the USA, and a six-month internship with the YMCA of Lebanon.
Antonio holds a Law Degree from Universidad La Salle, a Master of Science in International Public Service from DePaul University. He is an alumnus of Harvard’s Executive Education program in Nonprofit Leadership. He also teaches International Relations at Universidad AnĆ”huac.

Maria Soria

MarĆa Soria is a social worker with a strong background in psychosocial intervention and mental health. She holds a degree in Social Work, is a certified sex educator/sexologist, and has completed postgraduate studies in social therapy from a Gestalt perspective.
She coordinated the international Eleva program for two consecutive years, focusing on early mental health interventions and promoting safe, supportive spaces for young people. MarĆa works as a professional social worker at YMCA Salto, where she promotes holistic well-being and social inclusion through a community-based approach.

Valeria RuĆz

Valeria Ruiz joined the YMCA of Mexico in 2019 as the Coordinator of the YMCA Homes for Migrant Youth. With a presence in Tijuana, Ciudad Juarez, and Piedras Negras, the YMCA Homes for Migrant Youth have served over 75,000 children and teens since 1991.
Valeria studied International Relations at the Autonomous University of Baja California and holds a masterās in International Migration at El Colegio de la Frontera Norte.
Valeria participates in the Coalición Pro Defensa del Migrante and is an Advisor to the Elias Landsmanas Chair on unaccompanied migrant children of Anahuac University. As a leader, she focuses a significant part of her work on inspiring communities through philanthropic initiatives, building strategic alliances, and creating opportunities for young professionals. Valeria was recently appointed Binational Strategies Coordinator for MexicoāSan Diego. She will lead initiatives benefiting youth on both sides of the border.

39-year-old Chilean, holds a Law degree from the University of ValparaĆso. He has been involved with the YMCA Movement since 1996, building a strong leadership path rooted in community service. He served as Director of YMCA ValparaĆso from 2012 to 2018 and later as Vice President of the Chilean Federation of YMCAs from 2018 to 2022. Since 2023, he has been the General Secretary of YMCA ValparaĆso, leading initiatives focused on the holistic development of children, youth, and communities. His background in law is complemented by a deep commitment to volunteerism and social transformation at the local level.

Renata Ferrari

Renata Ferrari is the Senior Director of Global Development on the Global Relations and Community Engagement team at YMCA of the USA. With over 35 years in the YMCA movement, she leads strategies to strengthen YMCAs outside the U.S. in governance, strategic planning, philanthropy, and impact evaluation. She advises Puerto Rico YMCAs and promotes international partnerships.
A YMCA professional since 1986, Renata began her career at the YMCA of Montevideo, Uruguay, where she worked for the first 17 years. She holds a Bachelorās degree in Human Services and a Masterās degree in Human Services with a concentration in Organizational Management and Leadership from Springfield College.

Ramona Smart

General Secretary of YMCA Barbados since 2022, Ramona Smart, brings a strong background in market research, data analysis, and knowledge management across the Caribbean.
Before joining the YMCA, she spent several years in consumer and B2B market research. She served as Knowledge Officer at a regional real estate group, where she led trend analysis and strategic information dissemination.
At the YMCA, she has spearheaded the design and implementation of āIt Takes Two,ā an innovative fundraising initiative that has significantly strengthened support for essential youth programs. Her approach blends technical expertise, a deep commitment to community development, and a strategic vision of sustainability and youth empowerment.

Izabel Vito

Izabel Vito was born in SĆ£o Paulo, Brazil, and began her professional career in the ACM / YMCA SĆ£o Paulo in 1996, as Commercial and Management Analyst. In the early 2000s, she was invited to finish her studies at the YMCA SĆ£o Paulo Executive Directors Preparatory Institute, while working as Program Coordinator. She graduated in 2004 as the YMCA SĆ£o Paulo Executive Director and has worked in many YMCA SĆ£o Paulo branches as Branch and Program Executive Director.
Izabel has participated in the management of branches and the management of Social Centres. With her experience, she was appointed as the Social Development Department & Human Resources Department Executive Director.
Today, Izabel Vito is a Senior Executive Director at the Social Development Department in YMCA SĆ£o Paulo and runs the social centres YMCA SĆ£o Paulo has in its 19 branches.

Claudia Cely

Claudia Cely is the Director of Development and Sustainability at YMCA Peru, with over 18 years of experience leading national and regional projects in Colombia and Peru. She has worked with UNICEF, SDC, IOM, UNHCR, BPRM, and USAID, managing international funding, developing innovative intervention models, and ensuring technical and ethical standards in emergency, humanitarian, and development contexts.
She has played a key role in positioning YMCA Peru as a regional leader in mental health, youth empowerment, advocacy, sport for development, and monitoring and evaluation.
Claudia has contributed to the implementation of programs such as ELEVA, LĆderPlanet, and initiatives supported by the Templeton World Charity Foundation, while fostering regional networks to amplify social impact.
A Colombian-Peruvian psychologist with a Masterās degree in Education, she is known for building cross-sector partnerships, empowering communities, and consistently advocating for rights protection, inclusion, and sustainability.

Gerardo Medina

He holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Masterās in Public Services Regulation from PUCP, and is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP). He has extensive experience leading capital projects from the ownerās side. As a volunteer, he has held multiple programmatic and governance roles, including serving twice as Chair of the Board of YMCA Peru. He currently serves as Chair of the Executive Committee of YMCA LAC, supporting the Regional Node in strengthening institutional capacity. Cristina Neglia, born in SĆ£o Paulo, Brazil, began her journey with YMCA SĆ£o Paulo in 1995 as a Fitness and Dance Instructor. In the 2000s, she trained as an Executive Director while coordinating the General Program. After graduating, she worked across various YMCA SĆ£o Paulo branches, organizing events, camps, and sociocultural programs.
A committed member of the YMCA Brazil National Women’s Committee, Cristina has also participated in international conferences and workshops.
Today, she serves as the Secretary General/CEO of YMCA SĆ£o Paulo.

Evelyn Daskalakis is a licensed mental health counselor and the Vice President of Social Services and Mental Health at the YMCA of Greater San Francisco.
Since 2004, she has led comprehensive programs for youth and families, focusing on equity, community wellbeing, and sustainability.
Evelyn is committed to creating impactful services that address systemic inequities and promote community well-being. She also plays a key role in securing funding through donor engagement, grant writing and fostering relationships with public and private agencies to ensure the long-term viability of these vital programs. She believes meaningful change happens at the intersection of healing and justice and she is passionate about helping organizations create resilient, equity-driven programs that not only serve communities but thrive through long-term sustainability and visionary investment.

Daniel GalƔn Aguilar is a dedicated and experienced international leader with 17 years of experience in the nonprofit sector, specializing in the design and implementation of regional programs and projects focused on youth development. He currently serves as Manager of Programs, Services, and Innovation at YMCA Latin America and the Caribbean, where he has successfully led a variety of impactful regional initiatives such as YGOR and Eleva.
Daniel has also played a key role in organizing major events like the Youth Summit of the Americas and has represented the YMCA in numerous international forums. He holds a Masterās degree in Management from YMCA University and a Bachelorās degree in International Relations from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).

Andrea Lamprea is a Business Administrator and Psychologist with extensive experience in human resources within multinational companies. She serves as a Human Resources Business Partner at Siemens Healthineers, volunteer at YMCA BogotĆ” in Colombia, and is a member of the Regional Youth Commission.
Fluent in English and Portuguese, she has also participated in volunteer work and research projects, standing out for her commitment and results-oriented approach.

Bassielis Silverio

Bassielis Mabel Silverio BƔez is a Dominican professional recognized for her education, journalism, and community leadership work. Since 2018, she has been President of the Young Volunteer Leaders of the YMCA Dominican Republic, promoting youth development. Since 2020, she has also been the official Caribbean spokesperson for the Latin American and Caribbean Alliance of YMCAs, strengthening regional collaboration.
With experience as an English teacher, journalist, and data analyst, Bassielis brings strong skills in problem-solving, leadership, and working under pressure.

Zuri Sarai SƔnchez SƔnchez is a dedicated professional committed to community development and youth leadership, with a strong track record within the YMCA. Since 2017, she has led youth leadership courses at the CDC AtizapƔn de Zaragoza in the State of Mexico. In 2018, she joined the pilot committee and took on the role of lead youth leader.
In 2021, she joined the teaching staff at the YMCA AtizapƔn Kindergarten and assumed the position of Program Director at CDC AtizapƔn in 2023. Her experience includes organizing workshops and camps and participating in national and international forums, solidifying her impact on leadership training and community development.
Zuri holds a degree in Preschool Education and has studied Process Management for Community Development at YMCA University.

Dra. Mónica Xavier

Dr. Mónica Xavier is a cardiologist and currently serves as the Director of the National Institute for Women (Inmujeres) in Uruguay. She is a prominent advocate for human rights and gender equity in the country. Throughout her extensive political career, she has served as a senator, President of the Broad Front (Frente Amplio), and Secretary General of the Socialist Party. From each of these roles, she has championed key legislation to advance gender equality.
Today, in her role in public administration, she leads policies aimed at expanding rights and improving living conditions for women, especially those facing greater vulnerabilities.
