From Pueblo Libre to Bogotá: Three Students Return Transformed

Paulina Ortiz

Luciana Vergara Villacorta, Diego Tucto Laguna, and Joaquín Camacho Solís have returned home. After ten days of academic and cultural immersion at George Williams School of YMCA Colombia in Bogotá, the three students from YMCA Pueblo Libre Schools came back with something difficult to measure through grades alone: a broader perspective of the world that can only be gained by stepping beyond the familiar.

During their stay, Luciana, Diego, and Joaquín not only participated in the daily activities of George Williams School, but also became ambassadors of YMCA values, proudly representing what it means to be part of this educational community. They integrated into the daily lives of their Colombian peers, shared experiences and learning, built friendships, and carried a piece of Peru with them into the heart of Latin America.

The exchange allowed them to develop skills that go beyond the classroom: the ability to adapt, to listen from a different perspective, and to lead with empathy. They returned home with memories, fresh perspectives, and meaningful connections that will undoubtedly shape their future paths.

This experience is part of our commitment to educational internationalization, one of the strategic pillars of YMCA Schools. We believe in an education that connects learning with real life and prepares students for the challenges of the 21st century by strengthening global citizenship, leadership, and intercultural empathy as essential skills.

We deeply thank George Williams School and its educational community for the warmth and dedication with which they welcomed our students, as well as the families of Luciana, Diego, and Joaquín, whose support made this transformative experience possible. This partnership between YMCA institutions reaffirms the value of working together toward an education rooted in purpose, experience, and regional impact.
